I am very excited to announce that construction has started on a brand new $26.6 million learning centre at Darling Point Special School, aiming to provide purpose-built facilities and outdoor spaces for student learning and development.
This exciting project includes the construction of a three-storey learning centre, and an upgraded carpark to provide more off-street parking options for teachers, parents and carers. The new learning centre is expected to be completed within Term 1 of 2024 and will feature 14 learning spaces, 14 outdoor learning spaces, a manual arts room, a multi-purpose room, lifts, staff facilities, and student amenities. These new facilities will support future enrolment growth and facilitate effective teaching and learning through the integration of modern digital technologies and a relevant curriculum. In a show of incredible Bayside community spirit, we are also very fortunate that Iona College is accommodating around half of the special school’s students in temporary classrooms constructed on its land by the Department of Education, and in the Rosies Building (an organisation partnered with the school), for the duration of the construction. This important upgrade will not only prioritise the individual needs of the students, including movement, sensory, and personal requirements, but also ensure a dignified and respectful learning environment can be provided for all students.
